The Broadmoor Men's Golf Club calculates and uses its own handicaps. These are based on Men's Club scores (tournament and weekly) and your Golf Canada handicap index, whichever is lower (see below for exemptions). Handicaps are calculated the same as Golf Canada handicaps using slope/rating with the following exceptions.
Nine-hole Net Double Bogey (NDB) adjusted scores from Wednesdays are converted to 18-hole differentials by doubling them, not by combining two nine-hole rounds into a single 18-hole round.
If you play the second nine on a Wednesday, this score will not be included in the Men’s Club handicap calculation.
Men's Club handicap scores from previous years carry-over to the next year (for existing members only). For example, if a member played 20 rounds (or more) in 2020 then after their first round in 2021, their handicap would be based on the last 19 rounds in 2020 and the first round in 2021. After 2 rounds in 2021, it would be based on the last 18 rounds in 2020 and the 2 rounds in 2021. This will help eliminate the large swings in handicaps at the start of the year based on small sample sizes.
The maximum number of rounds used is 20. Up until your 20th round, all previous rounds are used to calculate your handicap. After you play your 21st round, then the oldest round (1st round played) drops off and the handicap is calculated using rounds 21-2 instead of 20-1. After you play your 22nd round, then the next oldest (2nd round played) drops off and rounds 22-3 are used to calculate your handicap. This continues so only your last 20 rounds are used to calculate your handicap.
The maximum handicap allowed is 36.
Your handicap index will be converted to a course handicap using the formula:
CourseHdcp = (Handicap Index * slope / 113) + (CourseRating - Par)
As Broadmoor's course rating from the gold tees is 69.9 and par is 72, this will reduce everyone's gold tee course handicap by 2.1 strokes, click here for a more detailed explanation!
The Broadmoor Men's Golf Club has changed the way we calculate our Men's Club handicaps to match the new World Handicap System (WHS) adopted by Golf Canada, the USGA, the R&A, etc. The WHS handicap calculations are different from the handicap system used prior to 2020 so the Broadmoor Men's Club handicaps have been changed to mirror most of the more significant WHS changes.
The minimum number of rounds to acquire a Men's Club handicap has been changed to 3 (was 2).
Conversion of handicap index to course handicap now includes the difference between course rating and par.
Number of handicap differentials used to calculate the player's handicap index is changed as follows:
Scores Entered Differentials Used - Adjustment
Less than 3 No handicap!
3 Rounds Lowest one - 2.0
4 Rounds Lowest one - 1.0
5 Rounds Lowest one
6 Rounds Average of lowest two - 1.0
7 or 8 Rounds Average of lowest two
9 to 11 Rounds Average of lowest three
12 to 14 Rounds Average of lowest four
15 or 16 Rounds Average of lowest five
17 or 18 Rounds Average of lowest six
19 Rounds Average of lowest seven
20 Rounds Average of lowest eight
While the Men's Club has changed some aspects of its handicap system to match the WHS, there are some features of the WHS that the Men's Club has not implemented (at least not yet!).
Your Men’s Club handicap is the lower of your Golf Canada handicap or Men's Club handicap, with the following exceptions.
If you don't have a Men's Club handicap from last year, then your Golf Canada handicap is used.
If you don't have a Men's Night handicap from the previous year or a Golf Canada handicap, then you are assigned a handicap 0, until you have three valid rounds or a valid Golf Canada handicap, whichever comes first.
Each member is responsible for entering their scores (both at Broadmoor or any other golf course) into the Golf Canada handicap system to maintain a valid Golf Canada handicap.
Entering scores into the Men's Club computer or submitting tournament scorecards does not update the Golf Canada handicap system. This can be on Golf Canada's app (either iOS or Android), the Golf Canada web-site, or on computer kiosk in the Broadmoor clubhouse (behind the bar on the way to the washrooms).
